Kindle / Nook E-Books

Post by Dean on Mon Jul 11, 2011 10:42 pm

To add a little to this thread we've decided to widen the thread to allow for e-books in Kindle & Nook that you've enjoyed and read which you think would be a great addition to anyone who loves to read. If you do buy something from Amazon can you state which store, US or UK.

For me at the moment I am sticking only to Kindle e-books as I have one and it saves so much space not to mention how much cheaper but I am sure any recommendations can be found in other versions also single_hug

I'm reading at the moment J.T. Ellison's "All The Pretty Girls" I paid a few pounds, checked but Amazon.co.uk doesn't keep records going back too far anyway it is J.T.'s first novel and it's a crime/thriller book.

Cool! You like it so far?

I've read 2 of Chelsea Handler's books on my Kindle, Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea
http://www.amazon.com/Are-There-Vodka-Chelsea-ebook/dp/B000UZQJ32/ref=sr_1_4?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1310424449&sr=1-4
and My Horizontal Life
http://www.amazon.com/My-Horizontal-Life-ebook/dp/B002UM5BIM/ref=pd_sim_kinc_2?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2

Both were pretty amusing. Obviously, I have no idea how much/what was embellished. I read both of these on my vacation the other week and while I definitely wanted to finish them, they weren't anything that changed my life.

Yeah I'm really liking J.T.'s books, most of her are available on the US Amazon but only 2 in the UK so far. Her main character is a female cop and it's based in Nashville where there seems to be a serial killer moving all over the south so he's the Southern Strangler.

I do tend to read mainly Crime, Thrillers, Horrors and mystery. I did buy a biography the other day but not sure if you know who Richard Hammond from Top Gear is. Basically he was in a Vampire Dragster doing 288 miles per hour when his front tyre burst. He had dreadful brain injuries and the book is about his accident and recovery from both his and his wife's point of view. His first time was 314 mph !

A little video of the crash.

I've not heard of Chelsea Handler scratch

Looks like Amazon.co.uk is having a Kindle, ( Nook is only Barnes & Noble which we don't have in the UK), summer sale. Check out the offers.

Checking out Amazon again and I found a new horror by an author I've never read but for less than £1 who can argue.

S.L. Grey's - The Mall

Dan is an angsty emo-kid who works in a deadly dull shopping mall. He hates his job. Rhoda is a junkie whose babysitting charge ran off while she was scoring cocaine. She hates her life. Rhoda bullies Dan into helping her search, but as they explore the neon-lit corridors behind the mall, disturbing text messages lure them into the bowels of the building, where old mannequins are stored in grave-like piles and raw sewage drips off the ceiling. The only escape is down.
Plummeting into the earth in a disused service lift playing head-splitting Musak, Dan and Rhoda enter a sinister underworld that mirrors their worst fears. They finally escape, but something feels different. Why are the shoppers all pumped full of silicone? Why are the shop assistants chained to their counters? And why is a café called McColon’s selling lumps of bleeding meat? Just when they think they’ve made it back to the mall, they realize the nightmare has only just begun...

I've had to hand over the Kindle so I'm back to just reading tree books. Well, that's not enitrely true cuz I bought The Hunger Games trilogy the other day and started reading it on the Kindle app on my Evo.

But I'm gonna hunker down and finally finish this book series I started almost ten years ago. I'm on the second to last book finally!

Probably. I'm trying to find out if they are going to be coming out with a new version sometime this year or so to plan accordingly. But it's pretty awesome as is, so who knows...

Well not sure what else they can do as you either want an e-reader or an ipad. Personally I like it the way it is, can it get slimmer? I doubt it. The good thing would be that if they did then you could get the Kindle 3 for cheaper price? Or wait for the January sales.

What about the sale after Thanksgiving? I couldn't be bothered with sales but depends if you want it as a gift or a pressie to you.

The Kindle 4 is due out late 2011, but no exact release date as yet. This one is supposed to be in colour too, for viewing PDFs. I am thinking of getting it for Mr Madnad's xmas pressie. He has a Sony e-reader, but I know he would prefer the kindle so I will get him one. Personally, it annoys me a little that e-readers (Sony one as well) force you to buy the book from a certain supplier. For Kindle, you can only buy from Amazon. My biggest bug though is the DRM - you cant share it. If I read a tree book and loved it, I would loan it to a friend but you cant do that with electronic books yet. Its like buying a book and being told you can read it on the bus but you cant read it at work.

They are great for travelling though - so small and easy to transport.

I was told I could load the entire collection on a flash drive and swap with others.

What happens when the Kindle gets full?

I don't use PDF's outside of work and unless work buys me one I will stick to my Kindle 3.

I'm not entirely sure but if you could only ever buy 3,500 books ( Yes I do think that's a lot of books) then you had to buy another Kindle then nobody would have bought one or hasn't anyone thought about that ? Reading

I think the library software can hold more books, it is just the storage on the kindle that has a limit - although I think you can get memory cards to stuff in them which would boost your storage

I finished The Hunger Games on the drive up to NC. I had read the first few chapters at home when I had the time but once I got going, I couldn't stop... had to find out what happened! LOL, now I'm about half way through the second book, Catching Fire. It's kinda funny cuz when I got back home, the cover article of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly that had arrived while I was gone is about the 2 actors playing the male leads and has set photos and stuff! I really don't wanna any spoilers cuz I haven't a clue on how everything ends, so I'm waiting to read that article until I finish the trilogy...

Well, I finished the entire trilogy a week or so ago. Very good reads, cannot wait for the first movie next spring!!! I do feel the last book was a bit rushed at the end, can't figure out why the author would do this though. They're actually gonna premiere the first bit of footage from the movie at the VMAs opn Sunday. I doubt I'll have time to watch them, so I'll prob just wait till it's online.

Reading The Help at the moment, it was a film too apparently but the book is great. I will expand on my findings in a bit.

Are the Hunger films/books for all ages or younger ?

I haven't read the Hunger Games books myself, but at a recent book convention, they were mentioned by one of the discussion panels that was discussing how YA (Young Adult) stuff, books aimed at early teens, has seen increased popularity by 20-somethings, and this book was given as an example.

It is considered Young Adult, but there's some pretty violent stuff/disturbing themes in the series (I mean, it's about kids getting pulled from their families and fighting to the death while being broadcast for the world to watch). It's not Twilight in the dystopian future if that's what you're worried about (I know I sure as hell was!).

I'm now about 30% of the way through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Took a bit for me to get into it, but it's better now.

Hunger Games are definitely on my 'to read' pile, which is in serious danger of toppling. In reviews I have read, I was quickly able to ascertain it was of a higher class than the Twilight bilge.

I am currently reading (or that should be re-reading) American Gods as I heard a few weeks ago that Neil Gaiman is starting work on a script for a HBO TV adaptation of the novel. Its a truly fantastic book, and in my head I have cast it already Razz Yes, there is a part for Joe - he would be perfect for the lead actually - who is tall, dark, brooding and muscular.

Still reading The Help, not enough time to read lately !!!

American Gods? I had a quick look, now I will have to find a Kindle copy. I adore Good Omens, read this book more than once. First time I took it on Honeymoon. Should I not admit to that? LOL, well you need a rest now and again. Skipper
